Projects

Lions Club ProjectLions is a community service organisation! People join Lions because they want to user their intellect, creativity, commitment and enthusiasm to get things done.

Our club was formed on April 21st 2002. For many years we met at Algester Bowls Club now the Algester Sports Club. We started with over 30 members. In the 18 years since our inauguration we have assisted many areas of our local community. We looked after the Col Bennett Park for 8 years and have been closely involved in projects with our local schools.
Our fundraising was initially raised by cleaning cars at the local BP. service station.
We then moved to running barbecues at various events including a weekly barbecue at the Supercheap store at Acacia Ridge .We now run a monthly sausage sizzle at our local Bunnings store.  We also have an annual fundraising event, selling Lions Christmas Cakes at Bunnings, as well as many   retail outlets around the local area.
We estimate that our club has returned in excess of $110,000 and thousands of hours of work to the community since its inception.

100% of all proceeds from our fundraising projects are donated to the community.

Some of the areas we have been involved in include installation of local sound systems in schools. We ran the Multifest Family fun days in the park, which started behind the bowls club and grew into a major festival over the years.
We organise eyeglass collection of old spectacles to be sent to third world countries.
We have been involved in overseas student exchanges.
We have an ongoing relationship with many other service groups and local members at state and local level.

Schools Projects
We have always worked closely with our local schools. Currently we are involved in the Peace Poster competition and the Fire Poster competition.

Lions Clubs International sponsors the annual worldwide Peace Poster competition to emphasise the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. Over 375,000 young people enter this competition each year to creatively express what peace means to them. Each year has a theme – for 2014 the theme is Peace, Love and Understanding. Students from our local schools usually perform very well at the district level in this competition.

The Fire Poster competition is organised by Lions Clubs in conjunction with the Qld Fire and Rescue Service. The theme for the competition each year is Fire Safety in the Home. Local Year 4 students are eager participants in this competition which helps to reinforce important fire safety messages raised in discussions at school in each child’s home. Entries from local Algester students have gone on to win the State Final of this annual competition twice in the last 10 years.

Our club is dedicated to serving  our local community
Our main priority is to serve in our local community. Recently we have assisted many organisations and individuals with our financial and volunteer resources.

We have an ongoing commitment with the Kyabra Foster and Kinship care Service. At Christmas we cook breakfast for the group when the foster parents and children gather  in the park. We also supply volunteer support for the group.

We have given financial assistance to the Acacia Ridge AEDI response group.

We furnished craft supplies for trauma bears. These are used by the Red Cross when children are in distress.

We have made various donations to many individuals as they come up. We recently donated an Apple iPad to a disabled local student who needed it for school work.

We have provided financial support for local primary school students to represent their district.

We support Radio Lollipop who provide entertainment and involvement for sick children in local hospitals.
